Sticks together: Ottawa'southward Sarah Thompson planning to have street hockey to Argentina

Thompson plans to have her passion for hockey to a low-income community in Argentina for a projection called Sticks Together.

One of Sarah Thompson's happiest memories growing up in Orléans was being allowed to stay upwardly belatedly to play street hockey.

"I think that'southward what's led me to where I am now," said Thompson, who plays NCAA Sectionalisation 1 hockey at Syracuse University on scholarship, "because I pushed myself and got out of my comfort zone. Those were the things street hockey gave me."

This leap, Thompson plans to have her passion for hockey to a depression-income community in Argentine republic for a project called Sticks Together. Working with International Volunteer HQ, she plans to bring a bag full of used hockey sticks and some new nets donated by Play It Again Sports to assistance teach youth the joys of that most Canadian of sports: road hockey.

Thompson starting playing hockey at six with the Gloucester-Cumberland Girls Hockey Clan, subsequently playing for the Lady 67s and the Nepean Wildcats. She wore the Canadian bailiwick of jersey in a series of under-18 games against the United States in 2019.

"I had been planning to do a volunteer trip of some sort for over a year now. I originally had plans to do something last bound, but, with COVID, information technology'southward kind of thrown my plans effectually," she said in an interview from Syracuse, where she'south studying sports direction and working as a intern with the Syracuse Crisis, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League.

Originally, Thompson had planned to play sports with equipment the kids in Argentina already had. Then she came up with a plan to take hockey equipment with her.

Field hockey is already popular in Argentina, she said. "I knew the kids will exist excited to get a agglomeration of new equipment and to maybe learn a little more about street hockey."

Thompson played competitive soccer before focusing on hockey. And then why not focus on soccer, a sport that is already an Argentinian passion?

"The whole idea of the project was to bring something dissimilar. In a lot of underprivileged communities, children only have admission to a soccer ball," she said.

"This will give them an opportunity to play a new sport. When I was in uncomplicated school, I had the opportunity to play a whole bunch of different sports and figure out what I was passionate most."

The projection will last three weeks and kickoff in mid-May, involving 30 students in an after-school plan, but a lot more children and youth will be able to do good from the equipment, Thompson said.

"They're really on board. They were happy to have me teach some of the physical educational activity teachers downwards there how to teach hockey. That way, once I'm gone, they tin can keep to teach the next generation of kids how to play."

Thompson plans on playing for Syracuse until she graduates. She'due south not ruling out playing professionally, too, but visiting Argentine republic volition offer another kind of artery.

Play It Again Sports district managing director Rob Lavoie learned about the project through a mutual friend whose daughter had been coached by Thompson.
